They say I have a sweet ass, nice tits, a real pretty dress. They say I’m their future wife, or I’d look good with their dick in my mouth. They try (and probably succeed at times) to take pictures down my shirt. They ask if they can get my number, they ask where I live, why I’m not smiling, why my boyfriend lets me walk around by myself. Then they ask why I’m such a bitch, if my pussy is made of ice. They say that they never do this, as though I’ve somehow driven them to inappropriate behavior and deserve it. They say they’re just having fun, trying to pay me a compliment. Pretty frequently they get mean, slipping into a loud tourettes-like chant of bitch-whore-cunt-slut.

Before you try to tell me that it’s because I take my clothes off for a living, let me tell you that this started way before I was 18. Let me tell you that every single woman I know has at least one truly terrifying story of street harassment and a whole bunch of other stories that are merely insulting or annoying. Let me remind you that in a room of pornography fans, who have actually seen me with a dick in my mouth and who can buy a replica of my vagina in a can or box, I am treated with far more respect than I am walking down the street.

my boyfriend actually showed me this post by stoya and the subsequent discussion that went on among a bunch of nerds in this forum he’s a part of AND I WAS REALLY SURPRISED GUYS. and i feel like we don’t give a lot of young men in our age group enough credit (early twenties), though this of course doesn’t take away from how ridiculous/atypical a lot were as well. but there were a lot of young men who were sharing stories of women in their own lives being affected by catcalling, stalking, etc. and basically regulating on the dudes who were being stupid about the subject. but not only that, they were explaining in well formulated logical empathetic ways why IT IS NOT OKAY TO DO THIS TO WOMEN EVER. and how women are their own individual people with thoughts and wants and feelings and boundaries, and EVEN IF they do porn that doesn’t make it okay. and it made me feel really happy and i wanted to nuzzle the computer screen. i mean obviously i shouldn’t have to be stoked that dudes are like “wow harassment/assault is bad wtf,” because it’s like — fuck, do you want a cookie??? but we have to start somewhere. and it is very telling that among majority male dominated areas online where anonymity for the most part takes away the stigma of being judged for saying dumb shit, they are having these discussions and taking them seriously. and when they are taken seriously other men start regulating their own behavior for fear of being ostracized, or they just shut the hell up because so many other dudes are trolling them/talking shit about them. it shows me that things are slowly changing.
